Batam is a small island in Indonesia’s Riau archipelago in the South China Sea. A short boat ride from Singapore, it’s a free trade zone with multiple busy ports, known for its beaches, raucous nightlife and malls offering duty-free shopping. Batam has developped economically quite a lot since the 80's, attracting many factories as well as many migrants - in a short span of time - and  leaving many in a state of marginalisation or poverty. There are many orphanages and schools dealing with cases of poverty or marginalisation - ranging from lack of schooling, housing or even mental cases.
